How Ring Sizes Are Measured

In the United States, ring sizes are measured on a scale of numbers and halves, ranging from 3 to 13.5 for adults. Typically, women's rings are sized from 3 to 9, while men's rings are from 8 to 14. A size 3 ring will fit a finger that’s 14 millimeters wide, and each ring size climbs by 0.4 mm for every half a size. This means a size 3.5 ring measures 14.4 mm, while a size 4 measures 14.8 mm. Among women, the most typical sizes are 6 (16.5 mm), 6.5 (16.9 mm), and 7 (17.3 mm), while men's most typical sizes are 10 (19.8 mm), 10.5 (20.2 mm), and 11 (20.6 mm).

How to Accurately Find Your Size

Prior to measuring your ring size, it's important to consider a few guidelines. Firstly, it's best to measure your finger size three or four times just to ensure it’s accurate, due to temperature affecting your finger — your finger size can decrease in cold temperatures and increase if you're feeling overheated. Additionally, if you have a bigger-than-average knuckle, we suggest ordering a half-size larger than your finger size to ensure the ring can fit comfortably and slide over it. A ring should fit snugly on your finger but not too tight that it restricts blood flow, or too loose that it slides over your knuckle without any resistance.

Methods to Measure Your Ring Size at Home

Here are three simple methods to determine your ring size at home and ensure you get the perfect fit for your jewelry:

  • Measure with a String or Floss

Start by taking a piece of string or floss and wrapping it around your finger base. Be careful not to pull it too tight, as string and floss are stretchy and this may result in an inaccurate measured size. Once the string or floss is wrapped around your finger, use a pen to mark where it overlaps. Take the length of the string or floss and measure it on top of a measuring tape or ruler in millimeters.

  • Use a Life-Sized Ring Size Chart

Print out a ring size chart that is true to size and place one of your existing well-fitting rings on the circles. Pick the circle that matches your ring’s inner circumference.

  • Get a Ring Sizer Tool

Another option is to buy your own ring sizer for the most accurate measurement. You can purchase a ring sizer tool easily online for cheap, and they come in two categories: a slim measuring tape or a plastic ring lined with markings of ring sizes.
